Do these three simple checks with common tools to get a reliable first read on slope, compaction, and how fast water moves through your soil.

  • Check the slope with a straight board and a level or a taut string. Measure the drop 6 to 10 feet from the foundation to see which way water will flow. Many guides recommend about a 6-inch drop in the first 10 feet, while contractors often design finished grades around 1 to 2 percent (roughly 2 inches per 10 feet) depending on site conditions.
  • Try the screwdriver penetration test after the soil is wet. Push a 6–8 inch screwdriver straight into the soil in several spots. If it stops after 1 to 2 inches, the soil is likely compacted and will resist infiltration.
  • Do a basic percolation test with a 12-inch-wide, 12-inch-deep hole. Fill it and let it drain overnight, then refill and time how fast it drops. Drainage of 1 to 4 inches per hour is usually fine.
